WHY WALKATHON?

By The NHM Walkathon Team

As you hear about Walkathon, you might be wondering what it is and why we do it. We do the Fall Fundraising Walkathon because:

  • Fundraising is a necessity for our school

  • Walkathon empowers our students

  • It's healthy & minimalistic

Eight years ago, we wanted to move away from the candy-sale fundraiser model that was heavy on junk, but we weren't ready to do a write-a-check campaign that left our students out of the effort, so we decided on a Walkathon: Kids accepted donations and in turn promised to make a certain number of laps around the playground. We made it laid back and fun – the Cowtown marathon brought their starting gate, the middle and high school cheered us on, and the kids amazed us!

Since the first NHM Walkathon in 2014, federal and local funds to support NHM have dropped by over $100,000 because family incomes and property values around the school have increased. Donations from families and community businesses ensure the continuation of student programs not funded by FWISD. The PTA is dedicated to spending funds in a way that improves every student's education – you've seen your dollars at work with our new playground and new cafeteria tables. You've supported club supplies and travel expenses. We take requests from teachers annually. We've purchased everything from iPads to four-square balls, supporting our kids’ experiences. This year we'd love to refurbish and replenish the library and expand our teachers' work space. If you have an idea, join our PTA! Every good idea has come from a community member just like you.

Come out October 5th, from 5-7 PM and see just how many laps these students cover to help their school. Then watch them show off their tally marks for the rest of the week – this year the tallies will be marked on glow-in-the-dark bracelets!
